Exhaust Gas Scrubbers Since IMO 2020 came into force, “scrubber” has become one of the most discussed systems at sea. But do you really know how it works, when to use it, and why ECA zones exist? A scrubber (EGCS) removes sulphur oxides (SOₓ) from exhaust gases, allowing vessels to burn high-sulphur fuel while keeping emissions within IMO limits. Key points for every seafarer:
• Scrubbers “wash” exhaust gases before discharge.
• Three types: Open-loop, Closed-loop, and Hybrid.
• In ECA zones – SOx limit = 0.10%, or scrubber must be fully operational.
• Record all parameters and mode changes in the EGCS log.
