Understanding Ship’s Accommodation & Gangway Safety Rules Safe access to and from the ship is one of the most basic — yet critical — elements of daily operations.
Falls from gangways and ladders remain a major cause of serious injuries on board. To reduce risks, IMO and national authorities (e.g. Canada Labour Code, Regulation 12) set strict requirements for the construction, rigging, and maintenance of accommodation ladders and gangways. Key points to remember:
• Securely attach the ladder to the ship’s structure.
• Maintain proper alignment — no unsafe gaps.
• Use non-slip treads and handrails on both sides.
• Rig at a safe angle (≤40°) and keep it well lit.
• Always fit safety nets and lifebuoys nearby.
• Inspect, document, and repair defects immediately. A correctly rigged and marked gangway is not just a compliance issue — it’s a lifeline between ship and shore. Read the full safety guide on Master Work Station (MWS) 👇
