Hello everyone! Next meeting we will be diving into the subtle masterful writing of the Irish writer William Trevor (1928–2016). Known as one of the greatest short story writers of our time, Trevor spent his life in Ireland and England. Celebrated for his immense empathy and precise, quiet prose he was a three-time winner of the Whitbread Prize, was nominated 5 times for the Booker and mentioned in relation to the Nobel prize, To set the mood, I want to share this reflection by contemporary author Yiyun Li: "It is impossible for me to name a favorite William Trevor story. Can one pick up a favorite tree in a forest, when all the trees, with their secret joy and suffering, gaze at our meagre existence with sympathy? I can, however, name twenty or thirty stories I return to regularly. One of these stories is 'After Rain,' the title story of the collection After Rain. In the story a woman travels alone to recover from a love that has ended too abruptly, but the wish that solitude could exorcise loneliness is as faulty as the wish that love could exorcise disappointment of love. The story is to me like mental Visine. It doesn’t offer a resolution to life’s muddiness, but it keeps my mind clear when clarity is essential."
