The Sony World Photography Awards just announced their 2026 winners! 📸 I've looked at them and here are my three favorites and their official descriptions: 1) Siavosh Ejlali (Iran, Islamic Republic Of) for Lost Hope, a carefully composed portrait, using staged and symbolic elements in a poignant ode to Iranian women. ​ ​ 2) Vanta Coda III (United States) for the portrait Charlotte and Dolly, depicting a young woman and her cow, resting together in a barn to keep cool in summer heat in West Virginia, United States. 3) Megumi Murakami (Japan) for a glowing photograph capturing the lively Abare Festival, where men leap into the river as torches blaze, a traditional celebration passed down for over three centuries in the Noto region of Japan. Let's look at some of the words used in the descriptions! 🎭 Staged (постановочный) Planned, not accidental. Opposite: Candid (spontaneous). The photo is beautifully staged. 💔 Poignant [ˈпоиньент] (пронзительный, трогательный) Something that touches your heart, often with a mix of sadness. It’s a poignant story of love and loss. 💃 Lively [лайвли] (оживленный, яркий) Full of life and energy. The picture captures a lively party. 🎨 To Depict (изображать) A fancy way to say "to show" in art/photos. The portrait depicts a young woman and her cow. 📸 To Capture (запечатлеть) To catch a moment or feeling perfectly. The photographer captured the energy of the festival.
