Yet Barfield persuaded Lewis that he was simply wrong in being so dismissive of the past. Lewis came to see that he had fallen into the trap of “chronological snobbery”—that is, an “uncritical acceptance of the intellectual climate common to our own age and the assumption that whatever has gone out of date is on that account discredited.”[
