To stand means to be upright on your feet, to rise to an upright position, or to stay in one place without sitting. You can also stand something up, like putting a bottle upright on a table. When something is placed somewhere, you can say it stands there: "The tree stands in the middle of the park". A stand can also mean an object that holds something, like a music stand or a coat stand. If you stand for an idea or belief, it means you support or believe in it strongly, and your opinion about it is called your stand. Examples: • She asked everyone to stand when the teacher came into the room. • The vase stands on the table near the window. • The music stand holds the sheet music for the violin player. • I stand for fairness and kindness in our school. • That tree has stood in the garden for over 50 years.
