📖 That’s why I always ask my students to retell texts. Retelling a text is one of the most effective exercises for learning a language. Here’s why you need to do it: 1. It activates passive knowledge
When you read or listen, you often understand words passively. Retelling forces you to actively recall vocabulary and grammatical structures, moving that knowledge from “recognition” to “production.” 2. It improves speaking fluency
Retelling makes you formulate thoughts in real time without a script. It bridges the gap between knowing what to say and being able to say it smoothly. 3. It highlights gaps in your knowledge
When you try to retell a story, you quickly notice the words or grammar points you don’t know yet (e.g., “How do I say ‘however’?” or “What tense do I use here?”). This gives you clear targets for what to study next. 4. It mimics real conversation
In real life, we rarely recite memorized dialogues. Instead, we listen to information and summarize it or share it with others. Retelling trains exactly that skill. Tips for effective retelling: · Don’t memorize: Read the text, put it away, and explain it in your own words.
· Simplify: It’s okay if you don’t use the exact words from the original. Focus on conveying the main ideas.
· Record yourself: Listen back to catch errors in pronunciation or grammar.
· Do it multiple times: Retell the same text a few days later to solidify the vocabulary. In short, if you only have time to do one exercise, retelling a short text (orally or in writing) is often more valuable than simply reading it. #LearnEnglish #English
