😌Happy π Day!
Today is March 14 — or 3/14, as it is written in the United States. For people who love mathematics, this date has a special meaning. It is Pi Day, a day to celebrate the famous number π (pi).
So what exactly is pi? Pi is a mathematical constant. It represents the ratio of a circle's circumference(the distance around a circle) to its diameter (the distance across a circle through its center). No matter how big or small the circle is, this ratio is always the same: approximately 3.14. That is why March 14 (3/14) was chosen for this celebration.
Pi is a truly fascinating number. It is irrational, which means its decimal form never ends and never repeats. It starts with 3.1415926535... and continues infinitely without any pattern. Mathematicians have calculated pi to trillions of digits, but they will never find the final one.
The first official Pi Day celebration took place in 1988 at the Exploratorium, a science museum in San Francisco. A physicist named Larry Shaw organized the event, where staff and visitors marched around a circular space and ate fruit pies. The word "pi" sounds like "pie" in English, so eating pie became a fun tradition. In 2009, the United States Congress officially recognized March 14 as National Pi Day. In 2019, UNESCO went even further and declared it the International Day of Mathematics.
People celebrate Pi Day in many creative ways. Some schools hold competitions to see who can recite the most digits of pi from memory. The current world record is over 70,000 digits! Many restaurants offer special deals — for example, selling pizza for $3.14. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) often sends its acceptance letters to students on Pi Day, making the occasion even more exciting for young mathematicians.
Here is an interesting coincidence: March 14 is also the birthday of Albert Einstein, one of the greatest physicists in history. He was born on March 14, 1879. So on Pi Day, we celebrate both a wonderful number and a brilliant mind.
Whether you eat a slice of pie, learn a few digits of pi, or simply enjoy the fact that mathematics has its own holiday, March 14 is a day to have fun with numbers. After all, pi is everywhere — in circles, in nature, and even in the stars.🥳 Vocabulary:
