GRAND CANYON On February 26 in 1919, President Woodrow Wilson officially designated the Grand Canyon as a national park. Now, the Grand Canyon is one of the most-visited attractions in the US. Here are a few tidbits about the Grand Canyon👇 1️⃣ The Grand Canyon has been carved by the Colorado River. According to the latest research, the canyon started as a series of smaller canyons 70 million years ago. 2️⃣ The Grand Canyon is 446 km long, from 180 m to 29 km wide, and over 1,5 km deep. Despite its huge size, it's only the second-largest canyon in the world. The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon in Tibet is 3 km deeper and 48 km longer than the Grand Canyon in the USA. 3️⃣ The Canyon creates its own weather, and it varies drastically depending on where you are in the canyon. 4️⃣ Due to harsh living conditions, only 8 fish species are native to the Grand Canyon, 6 of which are endemic (can be found nowehere else in the world). 5️⃣The only human community of the Grand Canyon, Supai Village, is located at the base of the Grand Canyon within the Havasupai Indian Reservation. Inaccessible by road and with a population of just 208, it is the most remote community in the lower 48 states, and is the only place where mail is still delivered by pack mule. 📝 canyon / gorge = a large valley with very steep sides and usually a river or a stream flowing along the bottom 📝 chasm = a very deep, narrow opening in rock, ice or the ground #zippy_english #grandcanyon #USAculture
