This is an important factor to keep in mind as the Kurdistan Region is discussed as a potential staging ground for cross-border Iranian Kurdish movement: the PUK is more exposed and it controls most KRG-Iran border (highlighted part). The KDP, by contrast, controls a much smaller strip of the Iran border; even within the KDP zone, parts of that border are under Turkish control, and other parts are controlled by the PKK. In fact overall PKK might as much as if not more of the KRG Iran border than KDP. Finally, it is not just the length of the border: the section controlled by the PUK is also topographically better suited to infiltration and to Kurdish guerrilla forces establishing control over a strip of land inside Iranian territory.
