📌 The difference between «очень», «слишком», and «довольно»
In Russian, these words are often translated as very or too, but they express different degrees of intensity and different attitudes toward the situation.
Let’s break it down clearly.
🔹 Очень
High degree. Neutral evaluation. Simply means “very”.
Examples: — Very interesting. — Very cold. — She speaks very fast.
There is no idea of a problem — just strong intensity. 🔹 Слишком
Exceeds the norm. Often negative.
It basically means: more than necessary / acceptable.
Examples: — Too cold. (uncomfortable) — You speak too fast. (hard to understand) — It’s too expensive. (above my budget)
«Слишком» almost always implies that some limit has been crossed. 🔹 Довольно
Moderately high degree. Not extreme, but noticeable.
Examples: — Quite interesting. — It’s quite warm today. — It’s a fairly difficult topic.
In terms of intensity: довольно < очень < слишком
But remember: «слишком» is not just stronger — it implies excess.
