It’s Friday… and a slightly special one — it’s my birthday 🎂 So today, we’re looking at something we all say without thinking: 👉 Happy birthday Simple, clear, universal. But English, being English, has other option, different ways to say Happy Birthday. One of them is: 👉 Many happy returns (of the day) You’ll hear it less often, and it sounds a bit more formal or old-fashioned. So what does it actually mean? At first glance, it sounds like something to do with… returning things. And in 2026, that’s not a bad guess 😄
As our cows suggest, companies like Amazon deal with around a million returns a day. But the real meaning is quite different. 👉 “Returns” = the day coming back again So: 👉 Many happy returns (of the day) means
“I hope this day comes back many more times in your life.” In other words: 👉 I hope you celebrate many more birthdays. Now here’s the problem… Try fitting that into the song: 🎶 Happy birthday to you (6 syllables)
🎶 Many happy returns of the day (9 syllables) 👉 It simply doesn’t fit. And that’s probably one reason why: 👉 “Happy birthday” won. 🎶 But what about the song itself? The melody comes from “Good Morning to All”, written in the late 1890s by Patty Hill and Mildred J. Hill. It was originally a classroom greeting song, sung by children at the start of the day. Over time, the lyrics changed…
and it gradually became: 👉 Happy Birthday to You 😳 It is estimated that it is sung 5,000,000 (yes 5 million!) times a day - or about 60 times a second, every day! 😳 💰 And here’s a surprising detail… Until 2016, the song was actually under copyright. That meant if it was used commercially — in films, TV, adverts, or restaurants —
a royalty fee was supposed to be paid. 👉 Not at home, not with friends — only when money was involved. For such a simple song…
that turned into a very nice little earner over the years.🤑 👇 Quick question for our poll below 👇 What do you usually sing on someone’s birthday? #English #Birthday #IELTS
