I Always Wanted to Be “a Reader” For the longest time, I wanted to be one of those people who love reading. The kind who disappear into books for hours. I loved the idea of it. The atmosphere. The aesthetic. The identity. But reading never really worked for me. And I didn’t understand why. It wasn’t until adulthood that I found out I have mild dyslexia. Suddenly, a lot of things made sense. Processing written information has always been harder for me than watching or listening. If I hear something or see it visually, I absorb it quickly. But when I read, especially something complex, my brain has to work twice as hard. And I read slowly. Very slowly. Finishing a physical book can take me almost twice as long as listening to the same one as an audiobook. And that used to frustrate me. Because I wanted to love books. It took me years to realize that maybe I just needed a different format. Audiobooks changed everything. Now I listen to a lot of them. Probably more than most people read. I still read physical books sometimes, but mostly fiction, stories I can turn into images in my head. If it’s something abstract or logical that I can’t visualize, reading it feels exhausting. But listening? That’s a completely different experience. I process it so much better. So I guess I did become a “reader.” Just not in the way I imagined. 💭 Do you like reading?
