🎓🌱 Let's take a look at Some institutions of higher education teaching students about sustainability As a rule of thumb, a "sustainable campus" might mean recycling containers on campus, an annual green week, or an environmental class in the curriculum. However, there are a few institutions in the world where the campus is considered a system that is subject to the constraints of the environment. 🧐 Let's look at a couple of examples: 🇳🇱 Wageningen University in the Netherlands It is also referred to as the world's greenest university not as a marketing campaign, but because sustainability is part of its DNA. The university's buildings are energy neutral, and its campus is a living lab for sustainable food and land use systems. 🇩🇪 The Environmental Campus Birkenfeld in Germany
This university took it even further. The campus was planned as zero-emission from inception. Renewable energy sources are used to power the entire university, and sustainability is not just a department, but is, in fact, the identity of this university itself. 🇨🇦 The University of British Columbia in Canada
It is an example of what can be done on a larger scale. Some of the buildings on this university's campus produce more energy than they consume and even recycle their own water. Not only do students of this university learn about sustainability, but they live it too. 🇦🇺 The University of Sydney (Australia) This is a mini-city that is a change-driven community with a goal to provide 100% renewable electricity, minimize waste, and plan for sustainability as infrastructure. 🇺🇸 The University of California Davis (USA)
It has combined sustainable transport systems, food-ways, and zero-carbon housing, demonstrating that big institutions and sustainability are not mutually exclusive. With clarity, Sustainable Economics Club ECOSTAIN 💚
