December read: The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith (and two more books in the series that I couldn't resist reading) You may have heard that J.K. Rowling has been writing a series of detective stories under the pen name Robert Galbraith. And if you’ve read any of her work, you will know what to expect: multidimensional characters, elaborate plot lines, and a lot of descriptive detail, all put in the language that makes you question whether you’ve actually been learning English your whole life. Who wouldn’t want to get a little humbled? And I was humbled not only by the vocabulary I saw for the first time in my life, but also by my lack of detective acumen. As an aficionado of the genre, I got a little too cocky, thinking that I’d figure out who the perpetrators were without much difficulty. Boy, was I wrong! I devoured three books within a week, and only in one of them did I manage to pin down the mastermind. Pathetic. In my defence, there was soo much contradicting evidence that my brain was exploding. I would’ve read more books in the series if the third one was a little less harsh — child abuse, rape, psychopaths, and a lot of other disturbing stuff. I actually had a nightmare after reading Career of Evil, so if you’re as impressionable as myself, proceed with caution. Now onto you – have you read the series?🙂
