How did Obama get ahold of that money and where did those funds come from? Obama accessed the money through two main mechanisms — Breakdown of the Money Iran Received: 1. $1.7 Billion in CASH (2016) ▪️ Source: U.S. Treasury’s Judgment Fund ▪️ Why? Settlement of a 1979 arms deal dispute. ▪️ How? Delivered in cash (euros, Swiss francs, etc.) on pallets via cargo plane ▪️ Congress was not required to approve the payments, which was a major point of controversy. 2. Unfrozen Iranian Assets ($50-$150 Billion) ▪️ Source: Iran’s own money that had been frozen in foreign banks due to sanctions ▪️ How Much Was Actually Usable?
