Day 28: The Rose City and the Mystery of the Narrow Gorge 🇯🇴🏜️
March 19, 2026
After the futuristic landscapes and tense rhythm of Dubai, Jordan welcomed me with a saving silence and a completely different scale of time. Today I found myself in Petra — the legendary capital of the lost Nabataean Kingdom, carved directly into the red sandstone cliffs millennia ago.
The path into the city itself is a separate, incredibly atmospheric adventure. To get there, you have to walk through the Siq — a narrow, winding tectonic gorge over a kilometer long. Sheer cliffs tens of meters high close in overhead, leaving only a thin strip of piercingly blue sky. The color of the stone around you constantly changes from ochre to soft pink depending on how the sun's rays refract.
And then, just as you get used to the cool twilight of the canyon, the rocks suddenly part, and bright light pours through the resulting gap. Right in front of you, like a mirage, the sun-drenched facade of Al-Khazneh (The Treasury) appears. This is that very breathtaking moment from the Indiana Jones movies, only a thousand times more grandiose in reality! The exquisite ancient stone carving and the colossal size of the facade, carved into the monolithic rock, make you freeze in awe of the ancient architects' mastery.
I spent the rest of the day unhurriedly exploring the amphitheaters, royal tombs, and cave dwellings. Local Bedouins with their eyes colorfully lined with kohl eagerly offered camel or donkey rides, but I preferred to walk these ancient paths on foot. Toward evening, one of the Bedouins treated me to scalding hot, sweet mint tea. We sat on the warm stones, watching the setting sun paint the city a rich crimson, and listening to the echoes of falcons calling across the canyon. A perfect contrast and absolute tranquility.
