Question: Your commentary on Bhakti Sandarbha 312.3 mentions that a sādhaka without ruci may mix vaidhi with rāga by practicing rāga as if it was an obligation or an injunction of śāstra. Answer: It is neither an obligation nor an injunction. Question: The verse says: “For a person in whom the above-described ruci has not yet arisen but who revers rāgānugā simply by the regard he feels for a particular rāgātmikā associate (sad-viśeṣa), rāgānugā-bhakti should still be taken up while combined with the practices of vaidhī-bhakti. And for a person in whom such ruci has already appeared but who is of high social standing, rāgānugā mixed with vaidhī should still be undertaken simply to set an example for others. In this mixture, vaidhī should be performed as far as possible by making it one in nature with rāgānugā.” (Bhakti Sandarbha 312.3) I am unable to understand how combining rāga with vaidhī can be helpful in loka-saṁgraha, which Śrī Jīva Gosvāmī is suggesting here. Answer: The meaning is as follows: Once one has attained ruci, one executes devotion impelled by the ruci. But this may mean not always sticking to the standard rules. In such a case, the people who have not attained ruci and yet have great respect for a devotee who has attained ruci may also give up vidhi. This can cause a disruption in society because persons who have not attained ruci should not give up vidhi. The loka-saṁgraha part only applies to such devotees (i.e., those who have attained ruci). The advice to mix rāga with vaidhī is not for loka–saṁgraha but for attaining ruci. Such people are not qualified to transgress vidhi. If, however, they do not follow vidhi, they will also cause disruption. In conclusion, both those who have not attained ruci and those who have attained ruci should not give up vidhi, but their purposes for doing so are different.
