You'll spot it in the works of many well-known Russian painters, including Kramskoy, Serov, Repin and Surikov, and just as easily on the streets of Russian and across other Slavic nations. It looks straight through you, reveals nothing, and somehow makes you want to explain yourself. The trend has travelled far enough to land even in the British tabloids. In Russia, of course, it needs no explanation. Everyone recognises it. Everyone has received it. Most have given it.
