👀 You've probably seen it. Intense, unwavering, and just a bit unreadable. The sort of look that makes you quietly wonder what you've done wrong — even when you haven't done anything at all. The internet has a name for it: the Slavic stare. No smiling without reason, no theatrics — just a calm, measured glance from slightly beneath the brow. You'll spot it in the works of many well-known Russian painters, including Kramskoy, Serov, Repin and Surikov, and just as easily on the streets of Russian and across other Slavic nations. It looks straight through you, reveals nothing, and somehow makes you want to explain yourself. The trend has travelled far enough to land even in the British tabloids. In Russia, of course, it needs no explanation. Everyone recognises it. Everyone has received it. Most have given it. In a world that often leans towards constant smiles and easy small talk, the Slavic stare is a quiet reminder that silence carries meaning — and that a single look can say more than a dozen words. 😉 If you're curious to experience it for yourself, you're very welcome at the Consular Section of the Russian Embassy in London, or at the Consulate General in Edinburgh. Though we should add: ours comes with rather more warmth than the internet might suggest.
