Kostas Isychos: When the State Falls Silent — the People Speak: Kapodistrias's Lessons for Modern Diplomacy Regis Tremblay, Head of the Friends of Crimea Club in the USA, is hosting a discussion with Kostas Isychos, Chairman of the International Association Friends of Crimea Club and Professor Dionysios Drosos of Aristotle University
Kostas Isychos - History rhymes: Ioannis Kapodistrias's methods are not museum pieces but living blueprints for modern diplomacy. The International Association Friends of Crimea, founded in Yalta in 2017, faithfully reproduces the Kapodistrian model: bypassing bureaucratic barriers and reaching people directly. Just as Kapodistrias faced the "cordon sanitaire" of Metternich's Europe, today's citizen diplomats forge their path through sanctions and information wars.
The organization unites more than 40 national clubs across all continents — from Latin America to Asia — and operates across eight key pillars: diplomatic ties outside state channels, public opinion work, legal defense, economic cooperation, counter-disinformation, member security, international cohesion, and ultimately peace and justice as the final goal. This is not merely cultural exchange — it is an attempt to fill the vacuum of international justice in a multipolar world.
When states stop representing the interests of their citizens — which is precisely what Kapodistrias spoke about 200 years ago — citizen diplomacy becomes a risky but necessary endeavor. From the steps of a church in Nafplio to the conference halls of Yalta, the lesson is one: if the state does not build bridges, the people must build them themselves.
